Hey that's really awesome, I am going to take inspiration from your setup. I have a nice open space that I'm working on as well but I just need the equipment. I will post a picture of my open space and maybe you can give me some tips or suggestions.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ย I'm pretty proud!!ย

Wowย that's a great space youย have there! There is definitely room for a heavy bag! but what isย really cool is that you have a wood ceiling, you could totally put up a chin up/Pull up/hangย bar!! ย

Id make one side Muay Thai and one side fitness too, but that's just me being ODC hahaha

Cant wait to see the finished gym.ย

So jealous.ย

Gonna do the same once the cash situation lets me get ground floor apartment with a back yard.

Real quick - is it true that the mats are the expensive part of doing it? Like cost more than the bags and Mr Bob dummy etc..?

I got a few second hand ones and some online for 20bucks a sqย metre, my heavy bag was more expensive. An old carpet will do the trick too if youโ€™re on a budgetย

Hey there ๐Ÿ™‚ย definitely go for a 6ft because you can use it for low leg chops as well as everything else. I really like my teardrop too but thatโ€™s moreย for uppercuts and knees .

filling- I bought mine already filled but Iโ€™ve seen people put in old clothes and rags as long as all buttons and zips have been removed ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผย

Hey, thanks for your input, any thoughts about leather or non-leather for home use?

I have non leather but I live in a humid climate so organic materials seem to get mould of them Pretty quick here. ย But Iโ€™m unsure if leather is better Inย bags.

Richard, you're in my hometown! I was going to suggest that if you get a standing bag, one that has a base, that you can fill it with water because then you can empty it and move it more easily than if it's sand. But because of all the snow and change in temperatures that Boulder experiences, the water might be a risky move. A hanging bag is preferable for all kinds of reasons, but obviously depends on budget and if you have somewhere to hang it from.

Leather cracks if you don't fill the bag properly at the beginning. Any slack, "bagginess" between the filling and the leather, if you hit it for a few weeks it will crack and break open. So make sure you really pack it and keep adding to it over the first couple weeks to make sure it's full, even as the filling starts to settle.ย

I'm looking at everyone's gyms and am jealous of these mats. Kevin and I are working on tile and it's very slippery when we start to drip from sweat and I think I hurt my foot by stomping around like a maniac on such a hard surface... I thought I was tougher, I guess.

Thanks Sylvie, there are soooo many choices out there, and I only know the bags we use at my gym,, but never paid any attention to the DETAILS.. I saw somewhere that you were from Colorado, wondered how you got from here to THERE? I stumbled on Muay Thai by accident taking my grandson to his session, at an Easton BJJ / May Thai gym in Denver,, thought for sure I couldn't do BJJ at my age,, but the MT looked like something I could get into,, and fell in love with it.. sorry I didn't discover it a LONG time ago.. anyway, I'm trying to get a place at home to work out until they get an answer for the virus... thanks for your videos and blog.. what a great source of info and inspiration for me...r

That sucks about your foot, I remember I hurt my foot too from training Karate on wooden floor boards. If you canโ€™tย get mats at the moment, old carpet can take some of the impact too or a yoga mat but thatโ€™s a bit limiting.ย

Hey there, love the gyms shown here. Great thread idea! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

just wanted to share our little living room gym. When the lockdown got real, I spent a little cash so Ina and I could continue training. I feel very lucky and thankful to have her by my side and to have the opportunity for a home gym like this. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐ŸฅŠ

ย This jump rope is not used indoors btw., but in our driveway. Itโ€™s brutal and rips your arms out after 30 seconds. ๐Ÿ˜…

Thank you!ย Yeah with the gloves I kinda ignored Sylvieโ€˜s advice she gave in her equipment rundown, about how the design on these fancy ones fades away with time because itโ€™s only a skin over leather. But they just looked too cool.

This is Paradise Gym, (named after my snake business, Paradise Pythons). I have a 6 foot heavy bag, jump rope, Thai pads, focus pads and gloves. I'm planning on adding a uppercut bag to the set up. The out side area (my back yard) has my new boxing ring, I'm building the floor this weekend. Also I have a chicken coop with 3 chickens for added authenticity.

You got your own ring? Ha, do you just spar in it? Better watch you don't get in trouble with your local authorities like my mate did.ย

I'd met this guy 6 years before I moved to Australia and kept in touch with him, had him on facebook when that got popular. I'd always assumed he owned a Muay Thai Gym in Perth as he was always promoting events at his 'gym' on his facebook page. But when I moved to Perth I found out he'd just been running a fight club in his back yard! Once it was brought to attention of his local council they sent him an angry letter saying the police had been contacted, so he shut it down quick! I took a picture of the letter, I'll see if I can blank out the names and addresses and post it here.

    • Geez, that was completely unexpected. Thought Diandra Martin would kind of walk through Hongthong tonight on RWS, but instead a very sharp KO on a 1-2 from Hongtong. Hongtong looked at a size disadvantage even, and Martin had beaten Amber Kitchen on ONE (looking it up). Our interest in this fight was Sylvie has fought Hongthong 4 times herself giving up huge weight (about 22 lbs), and we almost always are pulling for her ex-opponents (nothing against Diandra, we just don't know her). We know Hongthong and her gym, her gymmates, and her coach well. This is a huge win for Hongthong who has been fighting Muay Thai for long time. I also suspect that Diandra wasn't well served by fighting a patient, "Thai Style" fight. When Hongthong can reset, reset, reset she's on much more comfortable ground. ย
    • https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?ref=watch_permalink&v=942850751079497 So enjoying this Udon festival fight stream, found via Egokind (https://x.com/Egokind1) This is the real of Muay Thai. Hell, the last fight with kids was pulling 6K viewers in the stream, while RWS was pulling 2K. There was a Japanese fighter earlier (guessing from appearances), maybe big-for-his-age 12, or maybe 14, who gave it his all as the Thai illegal tripped him endlessly, such a very real experience for him. Just hearing the crowd of gamblers and community shout on every strike, even the local commercials, this is just beautiful stuff. Hard to explain how satisfying it is when it its not just a "show" for tourists. I say this, as two...maybe "influencers"?? (who don't have much Muay Thai, or once had Muay Thai, but now seem to have have quite a bit of animosity), go hard at each other in the ring, right now. There is a difference between a "show" that is a commercial product, and what I would call Thai spectacle. Spectacle is understood as unreal (thus, unmeaningful, un-significant). Thailand's Muay Thai, in its cultural fabric, can weave the spectacle and the real, together...which is why Entertainment Muay Thai, as a tv phenomena in Thailand, was so hard to read. It was completely unreal...spectacle (Thai Fight & MAX in those days)...but then it started making claims of the real, even the "most real". In festival fights like these you can get an entire spectrum of Muay Thai, in all its shades and colors, from spectacle to the very real. Kids on the come up, Old Men, rising stars, big side-bet fights. It's like a fair of Muay Thai. The most wonderful is that you get the full ruleset in the provinces, including repeated and continuous clinch fighting, and very strong aesthetic sense of narrative in scoring. Everyone understands stories are being told, and they are being told at all distances, in a full range of skills, even among the less skilled. It is the spoken story of bodies.
    • Just heard about a name Thai gym's training style described as progressive. Westerners are the worst Muay Thai fighters in the world...let's train like them. smh. ย  On a deeper level, this may be the future of the sport, because the deep-learning training of Thailand's Muay Thai, how it got such excellence out of its fighters, came out of its culture, its sub-culture...which is changing/eroding. More and more those training conditions will not be available, and the lure of modernity (which doesn't actually produce fluent fighters), will always be there to fill in the increasing gap. Unfortunately, this also ties into the very old place Western (and globalizing) culture - its "civilizing progress" ideology - has had in Thai consciousness. If it has blinking lights, its good.

    • In my experience, 1 pair of gloves is fine (14oz in my case, so I can spar safely), just air them out between training (bag gloves definitely not necessary). Shinguards are a good idea, though gyms will always have them and lend them out- just more hygienic to have your own.ย  2 pairs of wraps, 2 shorts (I like the lightweight Raja ones for the heat), 1 pair of good road running trainers. Good gumshield and groin-protector, naturally. Every time I finish training, I bring everything into the shower (not gloves or shinnies, obviously) with me to clean off the (bucketsfull in my case) of sweat, but things dry off quickly here outside of the monsoon season.ย  One thing I have found I like is smallish, cotton briefs for training (less cloth, therefore sweaty wetness than boxers, etc.- bring underwear from home- decent, cotton stuff is strangely expensive here). Don't weigh yourself down too much. You might want to buy shorts or vests from the gym(s) as (useful) souvenirs. I recommend Action Zone and Keelapan, next door, in Bangkok (good selection and prices):ย  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Action+Zone/@13.7474264,100.5206774,17z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!2sAction+Zone!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2!3m5!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAyOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
    • Hey! I totally get what you mean about pushing throughโ€”it can sometimes backfire, especially with mood swings and fatigue. Regarding repeated head blows and depression, thereโ€™s research showing a link, especially with conditions like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). More athletes are recognizing the importance of mental health alongside training.ย

    • Hi all, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be traveling to Thailand soon for just over a month of traveling and training. I am a complete beginner and do not own any training gear. One of the first stops on my trip will be to explore Bangkok and purchase equipment. What should be on my list? Clearly, gloves, wraps, shorts and mouthguard are required. I would be grateful for some more insight e.g. should I buy bag gloves and sparring gloves, whether shin pads are worthwhile for a beginner, etc. I'm partiularly conscious of the heat and humidity, it would make sense to pack two pairs of running shoes, two sets of gloves, several handwraps and lots of shorts. Any nuggets of wisdom are most welcome. Thanks in advance for your contributions!ย  ย
