Hey there so I have not watch a lot of Muay Thai movies since Ong Bak and I am kind of in the mood to watch some movies with Muay Thai practitioners. Can you list your top 5 or top 10?

This can include documentaries, I have not seen much well done documentaries about Muay Thai, besides the one on the two girls.

I guess I could with general martial arts movies or with boxing movies but besides the Ong Bak I can't make a list.

Thanks.

There are not really that many Muay Thai movies, and even fewer good ones! Even movies that purport to include Muay Thai, like a fighter with that style, often don't fight in that style. We recently watched this all-female Fight Club, Kung Fu mash had a "Muay Thai" representative, but almost no Muay Thai (this was the trailer, the "Muay Thai" fighter not depicted):

There seems to be basically only ONE truly outstanding Muay Thai movie, that being Ong Bak (it captured an ideology of Muay Thai), even the sequels didn't do as much. Ong Bak just had an essentialism about Muay Thai history, its rural connections, a critique of Bangkok society that was profoundly simple. Nothing like it.

The director of Ong Bak's Chocolate hardly included Muay Thai moves in his well-received Chocolate:

It's kind of amazing that there has been no new Muay Thai great action flick, as almost all of Hollywood has appropriated Muay Thai for its heroes and villains. You can hardly watch a Hollywood fight scene and not see a Muay Thai teep, or reverse elbow.

Just saw Muay Thai Chaya yesterday.

Although it's more Muay Boran and i found that the style of the fights and fighters are a bit odd, I think it was pretty good and also included traditional and modern setting for the sport. Have you seen it?

Yeah, we watched that a long time ago. The star of the film was training at Kru Lek's Muay Chaiya gym in Bangkok when we visited there. I can't say the movie made much of an impression on me though.

There is also the movie 'Beautiful Boxer' life story of Parinya Charoenphol, a famous trans woman, Muay Thai fighter, actress and model. She was portrayed by male kickboxer Asanee Suwan.

Its a really good movie and gives an insight into life at a muay thai camp and life in Thailand etc...here is the trailer

Edited to say-ahhh I've seen Emma put it on her blog.

That was a very good movie, one of the first and most inspiring. Ironically enough, we didn't realize that the gym portrayed in that movie was Lanna Muay Thai, Sylvie's gym for a long time. We only really realized it over time. Nong Toom even cornered for Sylvie in one of her first big promotion fights:

I love this photo. Nong Toom has a very strange sadness about her, or at least she did when in this promotion (she fought too). It is captured in this moment.

Interestingly enough, probably Sylvie's best friend at the gym is Angie, a trans-fighter who idolizes Nong Toom. Sylvie is almost a kind of living connection between the two.

The French movie "Chok Dee" is pretty good.

Yeah, I agree, I kind of forgotten about it. But it is. Especially that as I remember the actor is not that bad for an non actor. I mean, I think it is the actual fighter that plays the character of the fighter.

    • I'm kinda stunned. I went back on my interest and clicked on some ONE highlight which supposedly involved one fighter using the other fighter's "pet move" against them. I played the video and just watched two people throwing crazy techniques and hitting air back and forth. I never got to the "move". Why? How did this happen that missing strikes was a "thing". It's like watching basketball highlights of "moves" where the basket is missed. Why? This seems to be a product of Technique Porn, the spread of demos and "moves" mimicked from fighters, where the actual efficacy is of no merit...until there is a Knockout. A crazy "evolution" of fighting.
    • Interesting fight featuring top two 105 lbers of the two Entertainment promotions. Islay Erika Bomogao with the victory, Mongkutpetch complaining later that she was robbed. Round 1 a VERY clear win for Bonogao. Round 2, I don't believe somewhat wonk throws in the clinch really score in Amateur (at least IFMA amateur, I've seen Loma toss fighters all over the place and lose). Seems like a solid win for Bomogao who is a really interesting little fighter, who I kinda love watching fight (even though she's on ONE). Here most recent fight, where she's fairly well handled, until she closes the deal. I love the vitality she fights with, and that she's not a heavy combo-forward fighter.  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2029120667993528
    • ALL IN. I see high-awareness, well-intentioned Westerners urging Thai fighters to invest (the operative word) in social media content creation (labor), which is smart, even needed advice as it goes. But...in the larger scope, the more you work (operative word) to turn Craft into Labor, the further you work to transform it into an exploitive - that is to say more precisely, extractive - means, and subject it to the forces of de-skilling. "We are not very good fighters...but, please become much more like us, so we can consume you more readily, even as fighting skill erodes". The Nouvelle Era has many hidden pitfalls, not the least of which is the making of the New Man (the hyper individual) who has become supremely digitalized. All this is well and good, as its the tide of the Earth right now, but I say: "Keep an eye on where Craft gets turned into Labor" if you want to trace the operative drain of the human skill and meaning...as we all become Digital Laborers. As we all are Colonized.

    • That sounds promising if you've already moved, how are things going for you now?
    • I'm sorry I don't really know. Sylvie is in touch with a collector and this person is where she buys hers, but there are not multiple copies available. Maybe someone else would know of a larger source.
    • Where can I find some physical old Muay Thai magazines? I am located in Bangkok. Thanks
