So, months ago, I had the great opportunity to have a traditional MT guy give me a private.  As I was warming up he asked me if I used any liniment.  I'd never even heard of the stuff/deer in headlights...

Several injuries later, including a torn hamstring, I'm wondering if my old self needs to start using it.

Any thoughts for a noob?  Pros/cons?  Do you use it?  Why?  Why not?  Does it burn?  Does it stain?  Is it only for fights mostly? Is it supposed to help with injuries? When/how should I use it?  Do you warm up and THEN put it on or do it before?

PS- I live in a mild to colder climate if that makes any difference...

Any insight is appreciated.

It's quite oily, though I haven't noticed any stains. The namman muay I have is in liquid form, though one chick on Instagram had it in cream form. I only really use it on something if it's sore, in which case I'll apply before training. It's kind of menthylated similar to Bengay or IcyHot so not for the eyes or other sensitive areas. I don't think it makes a huge difference personally, but others swear by it.

JRE @2:08.  Thanks guys.  I think I'm just going to jump in and get some of the liquid.  Hopefully this goes better than the time I bought gold bond "body" powder and didn't read it was the extra strength "foot" powder.

I love this stuff. I usually only use it before fights, but occasionally put a little on in training when something feels really tight. Put it on before warming up, though. If you're already sweaty, it will burn! It doesn't stain, but it does smell very strong. After coming back from a fight, my whole room smells of it for a couple of days!

I agree with Emma, be sure to put it on when you're cold. If you warm up first the pores open and that's when the burning is intense. As well, I only really use the liniment before fights. In Thailand the warmup before a fight isn't hitting pads and skipping rope as it is in some parts of the west, but the massage with the liniment warms up all your muscles and you do some light shadow to stretch out, then you're good to go.

So if you're going to use this for training, rub the liniment in (if you really rub it into the skin and don't use so much that you're shiny, it won't get on your clothes or car or whatever else) and then do your warmup. The Thai kids use it in the morning before the run as it's pretty much straight out of bed and onto the road, so they put it on their calves and sometimes quads. I put it on my legs if I'm particularly sore in the morning training,

There's a "cooler" version (this liquid liniment is a "hot" version) that's green and called "Marwin." That one doesn't burn and is better for massaging your muscles when you're at rest rather than to warm them up for training. It's also amazing if you have a chest cold to rub some on your chest before sleep, like how Vic's works.

The TV adverts for this one really get me for some reason. Just some dude repeatedly saying 'MAAAAAAAAAAAARWIN!'

  • 4 weeks later...

Just to add info for european folks:

I bought it from this website http://www.muay.itwhich is the italian interface of an import from slovenia (??)

I could order it and pay in cash at the postal guy, it took one week, no problems.

Here the list of all european distributors

http://www.nammanmuay.eu/en/where-to-buy/

I still have to use it, I'll let you know!

    • In my experience, 1 pair of gloves is fine (14oz in my case, so I can spar safely), just air them out between training (bag gloves definitely not necessary). Shinguards are a good idea, though gyms will always have them and lend them out- just more hygienic to have your own.  2 pairs of wraps, 2 shorts (I like the lightweight Raja ones for the heat), 1 pair of good road running trainers. Good gumshield and groin-protector, naturally. Every time I finish training, I bring everything into the shower (not gloves or shinnies, obviously) with me to clean off the (bucketsfull in my case) of sweat, but things dry off quickly here outside of the monsoon season.  One thing I have found I like is smallish, cotton briefs for training (less cloth, therefore sweaty wetness than boxers, etc.- bring underwear from home- decent, cotton stuff is strangely expensive here). Don't weigh yourself down too much. You might want to buy shorts or vests from the gym(s) as (useful) souvenirs. I recommend Action Zone and Keelapan, next door, in Bangkok (good selection and prices):  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Action+Zone/@13.7474264,100.5206774,17z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!2sAction+Zone!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2!3m5!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAyOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
    • Hey! I totally get what you mean about pushing through—it can sometimes backfire, especially with mood swings and fatigue. Regarding repeated head blows and depression, there’s research showing a link, especially with conditions like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). More athletes are recognizing the importance of mental health alongside training.

    • Hi all, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be traveling to Thailand soon for just over a month of traveling and training. I am a complete beginner and do not own any training gear. One of the first stops on my trip will be to explore Bangkok and purchase equipment. What should be on my list? Clearly, gloves, wraps, shorts and mouthguard are required. I would be grateful for some more insight e.g. should I buy bag gloves and sparring gloves, whether shin pads are worthwhile for a beginner, etc. I'm partiularly conscious of the heat and humidity, it would make sense to pack two pairs of running shoes, two sets of gloves, several handwraps and lots of shorts. Any nuggets of wisdom are most welcome. Thanks in advance for your contributions!
