Training regime?

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I have just joined so thought I would say hello and also post a question.

I have been doing Muay Thai for 2 months and love it. I go 3 times a week, however, I can no longer continue running and lifting weights as I did before as it would just be too much.

I'm really posting to try and find out what other forms of exercise you guys do as well as the work out you get when doing your Muay Thai class and also how you fit it in?

If I do Muay Thai 3 times week then I can still run on one day of the week (and then lift weights in the evening) and also a short jog or weights on one other day. That gives me 2 rest days during the week. Does this seem adequate? I am 47, fit with no health problems.

I kind of miss the running and weights but cant do it all!

You could perhaps swim?  Forceful  swimming develops cardio and muscles at least as much as running and some weights lifting. But goes easier on your body.

Its no traditional Muay extra training but as long you dont train in a Thailand gym this is no problem.... 🙂

In general 6 times/week. I try to add running in whenever I can, either in the mornings before work or before or after training. My sessions are around 2-3 hours and always involve pushups and pullups. Trying to have the discipline to add some strength training as well (goblet squats, dumbbell snatches, weighted lunges, turkish getups). Sometimes I'll mix it up with some crossfit. Struggling to add yoga back into my routine which would probably be very helpful.

If I do not have access to a gym I still try to train 6/week and focus on some calisthenics and high intensity stuff.

I haven't logged on for a few days but it's great to come back and see some replies, thanks all🙂.

It looks like you all do a mixture of extra exercises ranging between cardio and strength. I'm not too sure how much lifting weights actually helps with Muay Thai but (albeit a bit vain) I like having a strong body. My teacher certainly focuses on technique. She is far smaller than some of the big chaps that go but she has such speed and moves so naturally and instinctively.

I was surprised at the replies mentioning yoga, in what ways does this help with Muay Thai? I'm guessing flexibility and perhaps helping to relax?

Driving bike can replace running, and weights are not that important, you'll  have more time focus on developing technique more , reps reps reps.

Well if that's a picture of you RB on your profile I think you may be fibbing about the weights! 😄

I do only bodyweight, i used to do weighted pulls ups and dips for power tho.  I mean it's useful, but technique is most important. Iv'e seen guys with insane technique with almost 0 physical training beat really strong guys. But if you have both it's really useful. But first i would go with technique just because seems a better thing to have in a fight, either way is good tho.! Best of luck

Yoga in general is great for physical and mental well-being. But it also benefits muay thai by helping you improve balance, have a calm mind, controlled breathing, and of course keeping your muscles and ligaments and all that stuff healthy, which will help you remain injury free. Same goes for weightlifting, muay thai can he hard on your knees, strong legs help prevent knee injury. Or hips or shoulders etc.

A lot of times muay thai practice will be repetitive, doing the same stuff over and over. Adding other kinds of exercises will function as a counter-measure keeping your body alert.
