  1. Sports Illustrated article, Julie Kedzie: This is what it feels like to cut weight for an MMA fight. This sounds horrible, like cutting weight is one of the hardest parts of fighting professionally.
  2. Black Bird Fly Blog Found a new muay thai blog to follow. The latest post is a review of of Santai Muay Thai Gym
  3. Article from Breaking Muscle, WHY YOUR SI JOINT IS SUCH A PAIN (AND 4 EXERCISES TO FIX IT)
  4. Rolling Stone article. At the end of the embedded vid she talks about how important remaining undefeated is to her.
  5. An article from Popular Science about sex testing in sports. Deciding who can compete as a woman based on their testosterone levels.
  6. Dana Hoey aka threeoaks has a video installation of Muay Thai sparring opening at Mass MoCA this weekend (5/23/2015). It's part of an exhibit called Artists' Choice: An Expanded Field of Photography. Another photo still of the exhibit: threeoaks casually mentioned this in the training and work thread and she private messaged me after I asked for more details. I was super excited to find out this museum is close to where I live so I can go see her installation in person. I asked threeoaks permission to start a thread and also checked with Emma and Sylvie find out their policy on promotion/self promotion of forum members and they both agreed that self promotion is a good thing.
  7. This is a bit off topic but your "sparring" video installation sounds really cool. I'd love to hear/see more about if you feel comfortable sharing.
  8. Just saw this article from Fightland about a possible fight between Miesha Tate and Chris Cyborg. This pull quote really pisses me off though. Not only does it try to diminish Ronda's skills but it's insulting to other women fighting in the UFC/WMMA in general. That's an interesting theory. I've seen suggestions that say since Ronda is dominating her division she should fight men to prove how tough she really is. This article from Fightland does a great job of breaking down that nonsense.
  9. What about foam rolling? Here's brief article and video about foam rolling for the SI joint. http://thetriathloncoach.com/coaches/more-foam-roller-the-si-joint/
  10. I cross-posted this on the flexibility thread on the women's forum. I found a beginner and intermediate joint mobility series by Scott Sonnon on youtube. Here's the link to the beginning video in each series. I wonder if that would help with flexibility issues and joint pain.
  11. That's an interesting point about lack of education. Also, being cast as the villain and the face of the women's MMA, I wonder if she feels like she can't back down and apologize when she's made a mistake. I'm sure it's hard to have every word and action broadcast around the world and subject to intense scrutiny. Especially since no single person in a group can speak for everyone.
  12. I hate the manufactured trash talk and the insistence on being sexy. One of the things I like about Ronda Rousey is that she doesn't care whether people like her or not. Of course everything is being filtered through the lens of the PR/hype machine. It's interesting that she has embraced the role of the villain in the UFC, similar to the way professional wrestling has manufactured story lines. I am really bothered by the transphobic things she has said about Fallon Fox and Cris Cyborg though. As a cis-woman, who has had her own gender questioned for not being feminine enough, it hits close to home.
  13. Thanks for the review Michelle. It's on my google play wishlist. Looking forward to reading it.
  14. Excerpt on Jezebel from Ronda Rousey's new book MY FIGHT/YOUR FIGHT. I have mixed feelings about Ronda but this article is awesome and makes me want to read the rest of the book. How a One-Armed Ronda Rousey Grappled With the World in Rio.
  15. Fightland article on New York's first gay boxing club. http://figh tland.vice.com/blog/velvet-gloves-is-new-york-citys-first-and-only-boxing-club-for-gay-men
  16. The topic of slut shaming came up in the thread on "Dating a Thai" http://8limbs.us/muay-thai-forum/topic/40-dating-a-thai/ and "Tribute to Caley Reece" http://8limbs.us/muay-thai-forum/topic/77-tribute-to-caley-reece/ I think it's also something we need to be careful about in this thread when we discuss individual clothing choices.
  17. I hope my comment didn't come across as detracting from Caley's accomplishments. That was definitely not my intention. It's a hard line to walk. We all want to be judged on our own merits but we also have to work within the system. I definitely don't like that women "have to be pretty" or "have to be sexy" to get ahead but I also don't want to slut shame anyone for their personal choices.
  18. I posted this article on Sylvie's facebook page. http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/repeat-after-me-there-is-no-such-thing-as-overtraining The author's thesis is that for the average athlete the problem is not with over training but under-recovery.
  19. A perfect example of the male gaze that most women have to deal with on a daily a basis. Men are usually judged by their accomplishments and not their appearance.
  20. Donors should be free to spend their money however they like. However a more expensive server also diverts money that people might donate to to Sylvie's fight journey. Personally I'd rather be patient with a slow forum and get Sylvie to more fights.
