My old gym Numponthep (where Satanmuenglek was for a long while) changed location during COVID. Not sure about the current training set up but they are operational in Bearing, BKK. When I was there it was heavily focused on clinching. Recent training between Silatong (great fighter) and Yuto (up and coming talented Japanese fighter) here https://fb.watch/dE4hOLft4u/

Attachai gym in Bangkok seems like the closest thing to a nice setting close to everything since it's in BK.

Sadly Attachai is no longer in BKK. According to @emma's facebook post they are setting up a new gym in Ayutthaya https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=611345137083522&set=a.289400305944675

Their facebook page is still up. Last post was in March so not sure how active it is. https://www.facebook.com/ATTACHAIMUAYTHAIGYM

Yes, sadly the Bangkok location is closed now.

This place (now called Looknongsaeng - but I don't know the specifics of the name change, @LengLeng?) looks like a decent gym and I've been thinking about checking it out myself. Here's the website: https://looknongsaeng.weebly.com/

And the gym's IG profile: https://www.instagram.com/looknongsaengmuaythai/

It's in Bearing, which is technically in Samut Prakarn but it's very easy to get in and out of the city via BTS (you just have to take a quick motorbike taxi to the station). I lived in this area for almost 5 years and would say that if you want to be able to focus on training while still having access to the city, it might be good. But if you want to be right in the middle of things, maybe not ideal.

I talked to one of the Western guys there, they are operational and happy to help students find cheap accommodation in the area. The politics involved in the name change I got no clue. I plan to check it out end of August. Eager to hear of any updates from you @emmaif you happen to visit. Arjarn Num, Arjarn Permsak or Arjan Tid no longer there but Kru Silathong seems to be.

I went today. From Bearing BTS it's about 5 min motorbike ride. The two names are because it's a collaboration. Absolutely great training with people working there speaking English as well. 300 for one session and you get 3 pad rounds, clinch and sparring. Lovely atmosphere: 10/10 recommend. Just write to them on instagram through the link Emma posted. Shops and food close by.

    • The Development of Muay Thai in the Siamese Populace An interesting point about the corvee system of labor (established 1518) in the same work, is that it tied the population not only to the land, but also to the proto-state, in terms of movement. This rotation between one's land and state works, which included military service, would ostensibly train an outlying populace in warfare, circulating them back into their villages, so trained. This would work as a dissemination process of martial skills, as returning men themselves could train youth. If indeed (gambled) festival fighting throughout the village networks existed for centuries, developing a practice of inclusion/exclusion, this would account for a steady State driven effulgence that did not require a learning process of actual warfare (though slave labor capture campaigns were regular). It makes an interesting contrasted: a circulating farming populace continually training on rotation, and practicing that training in festival fighting, landed, and a far reaching and mobile non-Thai (Chinese, and others) merchant class, that transversed the region. The landed circulation of corvee work would augment my own thoughts that martial prowess also developed in general raiding patterns outside of the proto-states and their fortified capitals.

    • In my experience, 1 pair of gloves is fine (14oz in my case, so I can spar safely), just air them out between training (bag gloves definitely not necessary). Shinguards are a good idea, though gyms will always have them and lend them out- just more hygienic to have your own.  2 pairs of wraps, 2 shorts (I like the lightweight Raja ones for the heat), 1 pair of good road running trainers. Good gumshield and groin-protector, naturally. Every time I finish training, I bring everything into the shower (not gloves or shinnies, obviously) with me to clean off the (bucketsfull in my case) of sweat, but things dry off quickly here outside of the monsoon season.  One thing I have found I like is smallish, cotton briefs for training (less cloth, therefore sweaty wetness than boxers, etc.- bring underwear from home- decent, cotton stuff is strangely expensive here). Don't weigh yourself down too much. You might want to buy shorts or vests from the gym(s) as (useful) souvenirs. I recommend Action Zone and Keelapan, next door, in Bangkok (good selection and prices):  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Action+Zone/@13.7474264,100.5206774,17z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!2sAction+Zone!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2!3m5!1s0x30e29931ee397e41:0x4c8f06926c37408b!8m2!3d13.7474212!4d100.5232523!16s%2Fg%2F1hm3_f5d2?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAyOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
    • Hey! I totally get what you mean about pushing through—it can sometimes backfire, especially with mood swings and fatigue. Regarding repeated head blows and depression, there’s research showing a link, especially with conditions like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). More athletes are recognizing the importance of mental health alongside training.

    • Hi all, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be traveling to Thailand soon for just over a month of traveling and training. I am a complete beginner and do not own any training gear. One of the first stops on my trip will be to explore Bangkok and purchase equipment. What should be on my list? Clearly, gloves, wraps, shorts and mouthguard are required. I would be grateful for some more insight e.g. should I buy bag gloves and sparring gloves, whether shin pads are worthwhile for a beginner, etc. I'm partiularly conscious of the heat and humidity, it would make sense to pack two pairs of running shoes, two sets of gloves, several handwraps and lots of shorts. Any nuggets of wisdom are most welcome. Thanks in advance for your contributions!
