  1. I am getting a hip replacement a few months from now. Anybody in the forum who is training after a hip replacement? Can you write about your training experience after the surgery?

  4. In reading "Making Fields of Merit", a study of the Maechi (female nuns in Thailand) I came across one of the more concise summaries that outlines the issue of female pollution beliefs, of which have bearing on the traditions that bar women from sacred spaces, boxing rings, and the custom of having women pass under the bottom rope. It's good to have it laid out in one place.

  5. I would imagine that most of the traditions and customs surrounding Mahouts and any kind of elephant care in Thailand comes from India as well, so likely the same source.

  6. Namphon is my favorite (underrated) fighter. I just love him and his dignity. Known for his relentless fighting, getting cut a ton, it seems like he was on the short end of some decisions that maybe were reputation decisions, a lack of respect for his game. He owned Dekkers in their first fight, but was given the loss. In one of his fights against Samart it seems he just couldn't climb out of the "he's just a knee fighter" rep, as Samart dangle-armed his way to victory. This fight is one of my favorites of his. He fights the entire fight backwards, from the bell, vs the bigger, more powerful punching Orono. He out-femeu'd him, made him chase and chase. And in the 4th unleased beautiful, overwhelming boxing. But that doesn't mean it wasn't an exciting fight. Orono keeps on coming, building more and more momentum to a possible decision win. So much good stuff in this fight. Lots of windshield wiper frame offs, long guard shocks to take the pace of the powerful southpaw's punches.

  7. Woah..... Thanks Kevin, just fascinating. This reminds me too in Thailand that only Mahuts (elephant companions) are allowed to be male. I was told this is because of female mensuration too but I wonder if it runs deeper? The strength of the elephant being a sacred animal and having no place for a woman. A bit like the Muay Thai ring. Ha Even though most elephants in captivity are female!

  8. I rate Sinbi very highly, whilst it certainly caters for Tourists/Fat Campers it has current Stadium fighters and many of the Trainers are still active fighters, so there is no reason you won't get a quality experience. Develop a rapport with the Trainers and let them know what you want and they will accommodate.

  9. Hi Eric! I haven't had a hip replacement, however I did suffer from perthes disease as a kid. The condition is an erosion of the hip bone which meant that my hip was coming out of it's socket, and that my hip did not have a full ball joint. I had 2 surgeries. The condition left me in and out of a wheelchair up until I was 14. I started Muay Thai when I was 18, and not once did the kid version of me ever do the exercises that my physiotherapist instructed me to do. I was simply not responsible enough. So for me Muay Thai was my first foray (outside of swimming) into physical sports/competition. Because my situation isn't identical to yours, I can't give the level of advice that you would probably want to hear, however my experience is that it did not stop me from training - however due to my left leg (the non diseased one) being stronger, I found that I developed a stronger right kick than left, as the left leg was my standing leg. I to this day cannot perform a bodyweight squat with correct form, only now am I taking functional training seriously enough to see any real results in the squat (I am using Da Rulk's system and finding it helps me). I'd recommend them to help rehabilitate yourself (so long as you don't push yourself too hard and injure yourself). I'd also recommend kung fu style stances, I use Kung Fu.life as my main resource, the shaolin stances do a great job at building strength and balance and it's very easy for you to find your own pace and intensity with them. I know our situations aren't identical, but I hope my experience and ways of working around my bum hip will help you with your shiny new one. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery!
