  1. An article from Popular Science about sex testing in sports. Deciding who can compete as a woman based on their testosterone levels.

The testosterone limits are the latest attempt to draw a clear line between male and female athletes. In the old days, an elite female athlete would have to verify her sex through genital inspection or chromosome testing, but neither method was perfect. In the gray area between males and females, intersex people may have traits from both sexes. Policy-makers eventually gave up the idea of sex testing, ruling that people should be able to compete in the gender category that they identify with. Testosterone regulations came about in 2011 and 2012.

Tests can reveal whether the testosterone in an athlete’s blood is natural or synthetic, so doping is not the concern.

  2. Dana Hoey aka threeoaks has a video installation of Muay Thai sparring opening at Mass MoCA this weekend (5/23/2015). It's part of an exhibit called Artists' Choice: An Expanded Field of Photography.

"Fighters" is a 4 wall video installation in an 18' foot private room (ring size) within this exhibition at Mass Moca:  http://www.massmoca....ails.php?id=962 .  The piece is a 3 three minute round video starring a former pro Muay Thai fighter against an American kickboxer.  Its choreographed for clarity and simplicity for non-fighters, but only slightly (movements were limited the first two rounds, as was position towards the camera).

Here are links to a public photo on FB:

Another photo still of the exhibit:

threeoaks casually mentioned this in the training and work thread and she private messaged me after I asked for more details. I was super excited to find out this museum is close to where I live so I can go see her installation in person.

I asked threeoaks permission to start a thread and also checked with Emma and Sylvie find out their policy on promotion/self promotion of forum members and they both agreed that self promotion is a good thing.

I have two kids just about to enter adolescence - I don't want to lose touch with them so I prefer to train mostly during the day while they are at school.  I am a self-employed artist and sometimes art professor so that helps with time flexibility (although I have to watch I don't entirely bag art for MT - solution has been to put obsession with MT into my artwork which has gone well since a "sparring" video installation is going on view this weekend at a museum on the East Coast of the U.S.).

This is a bit off topic but your "sparring" video installation sounds really cool. I'd love to hear/see more about if you feel comfortable sharing.

  4. Just saw this article from Fightland about a possible fight between Miesha Tate and Chris Cyborg. This pull quote really pisses me off though.

"Ronda makes waves even in a low tide, as many people might say that the women’s bantamweight division is not as competitive as, say, the men’s bantamweight division. "

Not only does it try to diminish Ronda's skills but it's insulting to other women fighting in the UFC/WMMA in general.

I suspect that her opposition to Fallon Fox is actually very similar to her opposition to Cyborg, which is that she's "cheating" by having gone through puberty as a male and now wanting to fight women. Cyborg literally was cheating with her PED use, was suspended for it, etc. Because it's hormonal, I see the similarity to what Rousey's issue with Fallon Fox seems to be.

That's an interesting theory. I've seen suggestions that say since Ronda is dominating her division she should fight men to prove how tough she really is. This article from Fightland does a great job of breaking down that nonsense.

  5. Dtrick924,

I think that a lot of the seemingly ignorant shit that comes out of her mouth is in large part due to quite literally her ignorance. Based on what I was reading in her book, the lack of education is apparent. Someone mentioned (Kevin maybe, or Sylvie) that she (Rousey) has this huge responsibility as a spokesperson for women, and part of that responsibility includes being mindful of gender identification and how women want to be viewed and treated, but every time she tries to talk about heavy issues, she doesn't seem to get that some of what she says does more harm than good. I really do believe it's because she didn't know, and now her ignorance is showing. But that's just my take.

That's an interesting point about lack of education. Also, being cast as the villain and the face of the women's MMA, I wonder if she feels like she can't back down and apologize when she's made a mistake. I'm sure it's hard to have every word and action broadcast around the world and subject to intense scrutiny. Especially since no single person in a group can speak for everyone.

  6. I hate the manufactured trash talk and the insistence on being sexy. One of the things I like about Ronda Rousey is that she doesn't care whether people like her or not. Of course everything is being filtered through the lens of the PR/hype machine. It's interesting that she has embraced the role of the villain in the UFC, similar to the way professional wrestling has manufactured story lines.

I am really bothered by the transphobic things she has said about Fallon Fox and Cris Cyborg though. As a cis-woman, who has had her own gender questioned for not being feminine enough, it hits close to home.

  7. Finished it this afternoon. Surprised to see how easy to read and understandable it was. She definitely talks about how she does have a lot of responsibility with what she started. Wish she would have delved farther into that, but it also felt like she still had a lot left to say, so I'm expecting another book from her.

Thanks for the review Michelle. It's on my google play wishlist. Looking forward to reading it.

  8. I hope my comment didn't come across as detracting from Caley's accomplishments. That was definitely not my intention. It's a hard line to walk. We all want to be judged on our own merits but we also have to work within the system. I definitely don't like that women "have to be pretty" or "have to be sexy" to get ahead but I also don't want to slut shame anyone for their personal choices.

  9. Really nicely done. But is it just me and my personal response to the edits that being summarily called "the perfect specimen of beauty and brawn" is a little jarring and that a male fighter would never be called this?

A perfect example of the male gaze that most women have to deal with on a daily a basis. Men are usually judged by their accomplishments and not their appearance.

A faster server is always great, but I like the way Sylvie thinks - you never know how long there will be people to donate for the server costs....

Donors should be free to spend their money however they like. However a more expensive server also diverts money that people might donate to to Sylvie's fight journey. Personally I'd rather be patient with a slow forum and get Sylvie to more fights.

  11. Some people have experienced slow page load times on Chrome. In one instance upgrading to Chrome's latest version improved Chrome performance. Personally I see some sluggishness on Chrome (vs Explorer and Firefox), but nothing heavy. More that Chrome eats up CPU at a high rate.

I did some Googling around and found this very interesting article on how to speed up Chrome: Quick Fix For Your Slow Chrome Browser - I made this change on Chrome and it seemed to really speed up the load time, anecdotally so far.

The article explains it, but you basically go into Settings>Show Advanced Settings and uncheck this box (below) and Restart Chrome. It may seem counter intuitive to uncheck acceleration, but it does seem to help in some cases.

I just tried this and updated Chrome at Kevin's suggestion. It seems to help. I also need to resist the temptation to have tons of tabs open at once which of course slows things down.

  12. I just discovered this new blog the other day. You, Me and MMA https://youmeandmma.wordpress.com/

YouMeAndMMA is a blog by the husband of Cubicle to The Cage (Canadian reality television) cast member and aspiring mixed martial arts fighter Nickie Cleroux. Follow Nickie's journey (from Ron's perspective) as she prepares for her first mixed martial arts bout.

Thought it would be interesting to follow a female fighter's journey from her partner's perspective.

  13. This is a little off topic but I have found that using different web browsers make a huge difference for loading time. My preferred browser is Chrome but both the blog and the forum load painfully slowly. For me the fastest loading browser is Internet Explorer followed by Firefox. The new site is gorgeous but it definitely loads slower than the old one.

Paypal has an option for a website owner to create a subscription service/recurring payment button their website. Paypal does charge a fee for the service. https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/get-started/recurring-payment-processing

  14. I can pitch in.  Lawrence Kenshin uses a subscription service (sorry I cannot remember the name) so people can voluntarily support his awesome breakdowns - that works well - I do a buck a month cause I love them.  I see Sylvie has taken to other methods to support her fights now that the 100 fight goal has been smashed; not sure if there is wariness to ask for support but again but I'm game.  I imagine you fighters often don't have the budget to support what with working less to train more but I'm older now and happy to support in any way I can.

    Lawrence Kenshin uses Patreon https://www.patreon.com/

One of the drawbacks to Patreon or GoFundMe or any other crowd funding site is that they take a percentage of the donations. Sylvie mentioned this in one of her blog posts http://8limbs.us/blog/go-fund-update-done-99-fights-accomplished

I know that Sylvie takes direct donations via PayPal, with the address: sylvie 8 limbs @ outlook . com  http://www.paypal.com/bg/webapps/mpp/send-money-online (just remove the spaces in the e-mail address).
