What to do when your gym closes? - Summer Camp advice

Hi!

On the wave of recent topics I decided to ask for advice too.

My gym closes in august but I don't really want to spend a month doing nothing or just training on my own...

I was thinking of doing some kind of summer camp, but I'd like suggestions about it and feedbacks.

I'm looking for something in Europe (cheaper than travelling far) women and beginners friendly.

I do K-1 and MMA but I'm open to any combat sport camp, I'd like to try some BJJ and Muay Thai anyway. Somewhere to practice grappling and striking, basically, I don't want to forget everything!

EDIT: To be honest, I live in England, they don't do a training package (accom/food/training), there's just not enough customers/tourists who would be up for that, also it would be really expensive simply because of accommodation costs.

The only place for MMA I know of that does that in Europe is  http://www.mikesgym.nl/lessen.html

Though Golden Glory has branches in multiple EU countries and so does Mejiro http://www.mejirogym.nl/, although they are both just kickboxing/K1. 

The thing you have to think about is getting to EU is cheap but once you're in there it's expensive, whereas getting to Thailand is expensive, but once you're there it's cheap. They might end up being similar costs.

I know this probably won't answer your question, but I would just look up other gyms...but I have a lot of gyms nearby to choose from, I don't know how's it over there at your place.

Are you looking for a one-month organized camp at some gym, with training and accomodation? So you basically want to go train at some other gym for a month, like in Thailand, but in Europe, am I getting it right?

If that's it I would start looking at some established gyms connected to the MMA business, coz this is what your interest lies in...Maybe UK/Scottland/Ireland? There are pretty strong gyms there...I'd try looking up these gyms where the UFC fighters train and try to find some info about holiday camps/training possibilities.

You might also book yourself massages and do a month of spa and recovery :D I'm sure if I had no real choice, I'd do just that! :D

I really don't want to stop training for a month, I'm still trying to build my cardio and to memorize basic structures.

IwtgtT is right, europe is more expensive, but I've never been in thailand and I feel intimidated, I also think my fitness level is too low to face training there...

Yeah that's true but I think whatever shape you go to Thailand in is out of shape because of heat, humidity etc etc.

What're you thinking then - where you thinking of going or?

Anyway, ladies&gents, no thailand in my near future for many reasons.

I had a look a the gyms you suggested, they seem very cool.

I'll keep you posted on my plans, and if any of you is going to summer camp somewhere, share!

That is a valid point, I'll just have to let it slide  :mellow: haha

Yeah, I honestly think Holland is probably your best bet if you want to go abroad, as it's meant to be a nice country and they do have the best K1/kickboxers. Anyway obviously it's up to you, and I'll be interested to see how it plans out.  :smile:

Sounds like a fun thing to do!

But I haven't seen any promotion or trainingscamp thing around here that provides accomodation and training.
Maybe you can just rent a place to stay and choose a gym that seems good for you and just join all their trainingsessions and besides that explore a new country.

Holland has a lot of good gym's yeah! (I'm from the small country just next to it)

    • In my experience, 1 pair of gloves is fine (14oz in my case, so I can spar safely), just air them out between training (bag gloves definitely not necessary). Shinguards are a good idea, though gyms will always have them and lend them out- just more hygienic to have your own.  2 pairs of wraps, 2 shorts (I like the lightweight Raja ones for the heat), 1 pair of good road running trainers. Good gumshield and groin-protector, naturally. Every time I finish training, I bring everything into the shower (not gloves or shinnies, obviously) with me to clean off the (bucketsfull in my case) of sweat, but things dry off quickly here outside of the monsoon season.  One thing I have found I like is smallish, cotton briefs for training (less cloth, therefore sweaty wetness than boxers, etc.- bring underwear from home- decent, cotton stuff is strangely expensive here). Don't weigh yourself down too much. You might want to buy shorts or vests from the gym(s) as (useful) souvenirs. Regarding repeated head blows and depression, there’s research showing a link, especially with conditions like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).     • Hi all, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be traveling to Thailand soon for just over a month of traveling and training. I am a complete beginner and do not own any training gear. One of the first stops on my trip will be to explore Bangkok and purchase equipment. What should be on my list? Clearly, gloves, wraps, shorts and mouthguard are required. I would be grateful for some more insight e.g. should I buy bag gloves and sparring gloves, whether shin pads are worthwhile for a beginner, etc. I'm partiularly conscious of the heat and humidity, it would make sense to pack two pairs of running shoes, two sets of gloves, several handwraps and lots of shorts. Any nuggets of wisdom are most welcome. Thanks in advance for your contributions!
