Hi everyone,

After going to Thailand and learning privately with Yodkhunpon for many sessions, I have really improved a lot in the field of elbow and knee fighting, and have really dominated the close range fighting zone in my gym. (Thanks for Sylvie😁😁)

But lately, there came a new fighter who has really good Boxing skills. His punches are so fast, hard and accurate, that even though he has little experience in inside fighting, I had really tough times just getting close enough to make use of my elbows and knees during our sparring. Turns out this guy was a professional Boxer and won WBC fights, no wonder lol.

So I come here to ask, if there is any effective way to close the gap between myself (a Muay Sok/muay Khao) and a heavy puncher (a Muay Mat)?

I'd appreciate it very much 🙂

I also want to close distance. Here are two vids by Sylvie that have some helpful techniques. If any one has more thoughts, please share. I'd really appreciate it.

    • I'm kinda stunned. I went back on my interest and clicked on some ONE highlight which supposedly involved one fighter using the other fighter's "pet move" against them. I played the video and just watched two people throwing crazy techniques and hitting air back and forth. I never got to the "move". Why? How did this happen that missing strikes was a "thing". It's like watching basketball highlights of "moves" where the basket is missed. Why? This seems to be a product of Technique Porn, the spread of demos and "moves" mimicked from fighters, where the actual efficacy is of no merit...until there is a Knockout. A crazy "evolution" of fighting.
    • Interesting fight featuring top two 105 lbers of the two Entertainment promotions. Islay Erika Bomogao with the victory, Mongkutpetch complaining later that she was robbed. Round 1 a VERY clear win for Bonogao. Round 2, I don't believe somewhat wonk throws in the clinch really score in Amateur (at least IFMA amateur, I've seen Loma toss fighters all over the place and lose). Seems like a solid win for Bomogao who is a really interesting little fighter, who I kinda love watching fight (even though she's on ONE). Here most recent fight, where she's fairly well handled, until she closes the deal. I love the vitality she fights with, and that she's not a heavy combo-forward fighter.  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2029120667993528
    • ALL IN. I see high-awareness, well-intentioned Westerners urging Thai fighters to invest (the operative word) in social media content creation (labor), which is smart, even needed advice as it goes. But...in the larger scope, the more you work (operative word) to turn Craft into Labor, the further you work to transform it into an exploitive - that is to say more precisely, extractive - means, and subject it to the forces of de-skilling. "We are not very good fighters...but, please become much more like us, so we can consume you more readily, even as fighting skill erodes". The Nouvelle Era has many hidden pitfalls, not the least of which is the making of the New Man (the hyper individual) who has become supremely digitalized. All this is well and good, as its the tide of the Earth right now, but I say: "Keep an eye on where Craft gets turned into Labor" if you want to trace the operative drain of the human skill and meaning...as we all become Digital Laborers. As we all are Colonized.

    • That sounds promising if you've already moved, how are things going for you now?
    • I'm sorry I don't really know. Sylvie is in touch with a collector and this person is where she buys hers, but there are not multiple copies available. Maybe someone else would know of a larger source.
    • Where can I find some physical old Muay Thai magazines? I am located in Bangkok. Thanks
