Bangkok Accommodation Advice?

Helllloooo. 

Will be needing a place to stay for 6 months in Bangkok around the Thong Lo area and can't spend much, so any accommodation advice would be greatly appreciated. Looking to spend around 5,000B a month (or less if poss) and only want a small room with a shower, nothing fancy, no air con, no elevators or condo buildings etc - don't mind if it's the most basic possible thing. Also, am not able to sign a 1 year contract etc, and can't really speak Thai beyond counting to 10, and my trainers can't speak English. So would love to hear suggestions around that price bracket. 

If this is unrealistic then sleeping at the gym is cool.

Check out 4 Sisters apartments on Soi Phrom Pak/Thong Lor 25. Not sure if they do 6 month contracts or not but I think rooms there are 5,500 a month. Why Thong Lo area? Much easier to find something in that price range in Phra Khanong or On Nut.

For sure dude, at Numponthep, It's kinda in a back street behind the Channel 3 TV building, off Soi San Suk 🙂

Sounds like a silly reason, but it's so great for the heat as there's a huge open bathtub size tank of purified water for everyone, - with a giant block of ice in it delivered every day. Never seen something that good in a gym before.

      Your comments here remind me of two authors in particular.  The first, Walter Benjamin, who wrote Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction in around 1920, and William S Burroughs.  Both were concerned with the ability of modern modes of production of profit increasing quantity, with a corresponding collapse in quality.     The intersection of traditional art and contemporary media consumption is not new.  We still have art galleries, museums and opera.  We still even have cheese rolling, dwile flonking and the Atherstone Ball Game in the UK.  Let's hope there are enough lovers of true Muay Thai to support it at festival level, certainly these traditional forms can be promoted, there are numerous examples of art forms which have promoted their pure selves.  One example is playhouses live broadcasting to cinemas.  The old art form utilises the newer to its benefit.   I certainly intend to travel to Chenjigou to train the martial art that the Chen family have taught there since the 1640's.  I intend to travel to Thailand for similar reasons.

      Whatever one's position on the future of Thailand's Muay Thai, its hard to deny that many of the arguments for the unstoppable - but sometimes delayed - "evolution" of the sport, it's imagined "potential" being reached through globalization and hoped-for mass popularity, it's provincial/parochial (or corrupt) nature being technologically "modernized" and rationalized, mirror the justification reasonings behind colonialism, which held a concept of beneficent, educating husbandry and willful, well-rewarded participants in the culture. This is not to say that they are the same, we are in a different time in history, but only that the ethical questions about colonialism likely need to also be answered in this case, where "development" by powerful outside forces and interests is assumed as an unproblematic Good.

      This is aside from the worrisome corrosive effect of replacing extremely knowledgeable, deeply invested in-stadium fans with phone scrolling tourists who know very little about the sport or what is going on in the ring. A sport (and art) in a certain sense cannot survive at a high level of performance with such a huge in-stadium fan disparity. Audience will over time shape the product...when it becomes a "product". This is one of the quagmires of a consumerist approach.

      I'm sorry I don't really know. Sylvie is in touch with a collector and this person is where she buys hers, but there are not multiple copies available. Maybe someone else would know of a larger source.

      I can only comment on Perth. There's a very active Muay Thai scene here - regular shows. Plenty of gyms across the city with Thai trainers. All gyms offer trial classes so you can try a few out before committing . Direct flights to Bangkok and Phuket as well. Would you be coming over on a working holiday visa? Loads of work around Western Australia at the moment.
