  1. The pain is slowly starting to fade, I bought some potasium and magnesium suplement and take it once a day, it helps a lot!! I was shocked, but after the first pill it actually started to be less cramped. I actually tried some muscle relaxing pill before, but it didn't help.

    My trainer said I should try massaging the leg with thai oil before training, but I don't have it and I must order it online, so I can't have it like right now. I'm dealing with other warming up creams I have at home.

    I also tape it for support before training with kinesio tape - but with a technique I made up on my own, but it helps! It looks like in the picture below (there is pink and skin-colored tape, so it looks weird, but I just had these two at hand). I don't know if you see, but the tape goes in a V shape from my achilles upwards around my leg on both sides, and then the vertical tapes are for the support of the muscles, starting at the bottom of the muscle :) :) Picture (I still can't work out how to post them)

    During training I have to stop and stretch the calf every now and then, but I'm almost all good now! :)

    And training-wise I don't do any jumps or rope-skipping for now, I'm also careful when I jog during warm-up - I try to run on the middle part of my foot and sloooowly. It gets a bit cramped during technique training, when I have to repetively lift the heel of the foot, but I can deal with this kind of pain easily. 

    If the magnesium supplement is helping, maybe try picking up some epsom salts and having a warm bath in them, if you have a bath.

  2. That's actually the first thing I did :) But Sylvie talks about conditioning your shins in these two videos I found, which is not where my problem was, coz it hurt at the side of my leg, not at the front-shin part.

    Right now I still think it's a muscle tightness, so I'm massaging it. I even took a tennis ball to work and I'm massaging every hour or so :) :) I also read a lot abouth thight calves on runner forums and am trying various stretching approaches. I still feel the tightness, but I'm going to training today! :)

  3. Have you seen Sylvie's video on squishy shins? It might be useful. Also whenever my shins start hurting, which is about third day into my training week, I know I need to massage my shins. I use linament and mix it with tiger balm, and just massage, it kinda helps get it back to a base level of pain. If you've tried massaging, I would try doing it consistently, every day OR twice a day, and see if that helps.

  4. I struggle with holding pads, too. It's just really awkward, yeah ? For me anyways. Also, everyone is taller than me, so that doesn't help.

     

    Is there a diet thread started ? Diet is something I'm sure most people have some kind of struggle with. Do you think it would be helpful ?

    It was just her speed and also doing combinations that I've never done before. We do 20 punch combos at boxing, and I've only really boxed for the last six weeks. All good!

    I trained tuesday, wednesday and tonight. Bit too tired to write it all up, but we have been doing takedowns at Muay Thai, I really like it. Oh and last night, we worked single jabs and rights, was kinda odd just throwing one punch, by the end of the night I could barely keep my left up. I asked around and even experienced boxers were struggling too.

    I'm all for a diet thread. I've actually dropped a little bit of weight. I'm at 101.1kg. Most recently I was weighing 102.8. I really want to get below 100kg. In fact I'm going to make that a goal for the end of next week. I'm gonna push a little bit and see if I can get under 100kg!!

  5. You don't have to share it or even do it at all. I just thought it might be a good way to monitor your progress, especially when you're having bad days!

    Anyway, I hear a lot of people talking everyday 'I want to lose weight' 'I'm on a diet' or whatever, and it never happens or lasts. It's nice to see you really trying hard and putting in a lot of effort.

    I did 10 mins of shadow boxing and then stretched. I filmed my shadow boxing, although not sure if I will release it yet...

    1 hr boxing tonight. Partnered with this girl who is a really good boxer. I feel like a total fuck up holding pads for her. Nothing to do, except keep training and get better.

  6. Had a visiting Thai trainer, he might be sticking around I think. Really stresses 100% on every hit. Tonight we did jab, switch kick, right cross, right elbow, step aside, right kick, all like 100%. Pretty different to the other trainer, and very different to the boxing coach. He teaches the full swing around on kicks too, as opposed to 'chopping the wood'. Starting to think there is no right way... Dude's had 170 fights though.

  7. I'm over 200lbs too, so I understand to a degree. Here's another interesting tidbit about being thrown - when you resist and tense up it oftens hurts more than had you gone with it and accepted the throw. It will always hurt taking a big throw, but you get conditioned to it over time and just accept that it will hurt somewhat.  If you really want to work on this, you can have people throw you onto a crash mat. It doesn't hurt at all, and will allow you to learn to fall naturally and safely without tensing up. I used to take dozens of falls a night on these when I did Judo... Anyway, enough about this.

  8. My gym closed early today and I missed training because I was lying around in bed all morning. Instead, I took myself to my weightlifting gym and did some exercises for the first time in months. I worked up to 90kg x 5 on benchpress and 90kg for a single on the squat. I know I am going to be very sore tomorrow and perhaps the next few days.

    I've lost a lot of strength. I used to squat 60kg heavier than that for 5 reps. If I can I want to start lifting regularly again, although boxing and muay thai are my priority. I'll see how it goes.

    On a side note, this gym has two heavy bags, so I might go there sometimes, as it is only one stop on the tram from me.

    And I'm glad you enjoy reading it, I try to really think deeper than usual when I write it, it helps me get things in order and the cool thing is, I'm learning a lot about myself by writing it! :) and I'm still working on the visual side ;) I don't have much good pictures from training I can use, but I will sort it out sometime ;)

    Today I went to class and as it's a holiday long weekend, I was the only one there, so I basically had a private class with my trainer :) :) The best thing was, he pushed me to do sommersaults (I hope it's the right word, like you roll over you head to the front or back, or over your shoulder and so on) and he also has shown me some new types of sommersaults. He knows I'm not comfortable with rolling over my head, so it was nice to practice it in peace and quite on my own with his guidance. I learned a lot! :)

    Micc, glad to hear your forward rolls are getting better. It's just a matter of repetitions. It might help to know why sports like judo and bjj practice forward rolls... it's essentially the same movement as a forward breakfall. If someone was to throw you over your hip, you could fall/land safely, instead of like a sack of potatos, which hurts a lot more.

  10. I've always used 16oz (Raja, and they've lasted forever! I swear by them) and I'm made fun of for having huge gloves, lol! I have 12oz now and they fit awesomely but I've always been told to spar with 14oz or 16oz, nothing smaller. Anyone been told something similar? I'm 4'9" 48kg.

    I initially bought 12 oz before I started muay thai. I wanted to use them at a mma class. Another student told me to take them back and get 16s because he wouldn't want to spar me in 12s.

    The other night at boxing a guy was wearing a pair of winnings that actually looked comical, must have been 18s or 20s.

  11. I was googling Muay Thai in Vermont, USA and found a webpage for a school a couple towns over from me. http://www.vermontmuaythai.com/ 

    Reading through it I saw a few things that were really attractive to me: they welcome beginners, explicitly say that no one will be humiliated or embarrassed and there are pictures of women training in their photo gallery. 

    There were also a few things that really turned me off although I'm not exactly sure why: designed for rapid progress, learn simple but devastating techniques. Seems sort of cheesy and like some of those rip-off martial arts studios that promise you a new belt promotion every 6 months so they can make money off testing fees.

    They put a lot of emphasis that they teach "real" Muay Thai and training "like a Thai" but I'm not sure how I could judge this as someone who has never done Muay Thai before. 

    They do offer a free class so maybe someday I will get up the nerve to go down and check it out.

    I'd love to hear how other people found/chose their Western gyms.

    That's just bad copywriting. They are trying to sell themselves, but have just done it poorly... I reckon go check it out, they're trainers not marketers. You don't even have to train, just go and watch and see what they are about.

  12. Different kind of positivity/accomplishment here, but I feel really exited about it, so I will leave it here. I decided to test out a few other gyms since i felt my current one wasn't very strucutured in training. Yesteday I went to the biggest thai/kickboxingclub in the city. The classes where more structured, but there where almost 30 people on 1 trainer, basically too many people to get any personal guidance. Also, i quickly discovered that the mixing of kickboxing and thai meant that people there generally lacked a clinch game.

    Today i tried out another place. It was a smaller club, but it was headed by a thai fighter with nearly 200 fights under his belt and woman who is a former Swedish champion. I showed up for training, we where 8 people there, including the 2 trainers. I got so much more coaching than I am used too. I even got my 1 - 2 corrected. And the trainers joined in sparring as well. Getting tossed around by a 15 kg smaller thai is good fun. Only drawback is that they have slightly fewer trainings than some of the other places, but I expect to learn a lot more from these lessons, so I'm definitely switching gyms and looking forward to growing a lot faster at this new place.

    I tried four gyms, before settling on my current gym in my city. It makes a difference, I think you made a good choice. If you want to add in some extra training, you can always go in by yourself and practice combinations, footwork, heavy bag etc... To be honest I think the sessions where I train by myself are some of the most fruitful in technique development.

    Tonight I spent 2 hours at the gym. I shadow boxed, did three rounds on the pads with a guy I met in boxing class, did a few heavy bag rounds, and then sparred with a lady there for a bunch of rounds. She tried to help correct my left kick. Her goal is to try and go to the olympics for boxing. Pretty inspiring work ethic to be honest.

    I missed last night, I forgot to pack my gym bag properly, stupid.

    Sorry for the lack lustre report. I'm just very tired.

  14. Yeah, the funny thing about these type of arguments is that they are more likely to strengthen someones position than change their mind.

    I think you have some good points, but I also think you are biased by your own position, like the people you are criticizing. Similar things could probably be said about me!

I suspect that her opposition to Fallon Fox is actually very similar to her opposition to Cyborg, which is that she's "cheating" by having gone through puberty as a male and now wanting to fight women. Cyborg literally was cheating with her PED use, was suspended for it, etc. Because it's hormonal, I see the similarity to what Rousey's issue with Fallon Fox seems to be.

     

    I think the secondary issue is bone structure, which Fallon Fox has dismissed, I think incorrectly. There are structural differences in male and female skeletons. It is my understanding that male bones are more robust at particular points, but the main difference to my knowledge is in the pelvis. "The female pelvis has evolved to its maximum width for childbirth and male pelvis has been optimized for bipedal locomotion."

    I don't know the impact of something like this in MMA, I'm not sure if it has been researched. I do know this pelvic structure is taught to strength and conditioning coaches and the Q angle, is an actual concern when training high level female athletes and preventing injury.

    Fallon Fox most certainly has a different skeletal structure to the opponents she is facing.
