Below is a story told by the incredible yodmuay Hippy Singmanee. He posted this on his Facebook Page (and the story is apparently in his biography, but I don’t know where you can buy this). You can find the post here, and follow him, but I include the Thai below as well. With the support from my patrons, one of the projects we’ve been able to do is Thai to English translations. Mostly we’ve been putting these projects toward translating interviews with Thai legends, or more recently in translating Thai fight commentary. In this case we hired a translator to be able to share Hippy’s awesome story of his first ever fight in Bangkok, which happened to be versus Chatchai Sasakul. Hippy would go onto become perhaps the greatest 105 lb Muay Thai fighter ever, and Chatchai would become a WBC boxing world Champion. But back then, Hippy was a little rising star in the South and was coming to be tested by a local star in the Bangkok scene. These are the kinds of memories that will be lost to the English speaking world if we do not go the extra mile and translate and share them.

Chatchai as a boy fighter on the left, Hippy on the right

Hippy’s First Fight in Bangkok, in his words…

When I was a child boxer in Southern Thailand, I went to fight all over the region. I then had a chance to fight in Bangkok for the first time in my life. Normally fighting was easy. But this time, my skill was tested by one of the best fighters who I call “Arjan” [professor, great teacher]. Go ahead and read. The whole story is in the book “Boxing Legend of the South”.

I reached the capital for the first time to fight with a past champion Ai Neung Sitbunjong. [Ai Neung Petchyindee, or Chatchai Singwangcha Sasakul] During the train ride from Nakhon Srithammarat to Bangkok, I thought of a song “Don’t go to Bangkok”. In the past many songs sung about how people in Bangkok were untrustworthy. It made me worried to be around people with central Thai dialect (Bangkok Thai). I came with my dad. Back then, if my father took me or other fighters from the gym to fight somewhere, my mom had to take care of my siblings at home. It was not easy to bring children along to fights. Next morning we arrived at Hualumpong. It was huge, just as people had said. I was very happy. I inhaled fully to get Hualumpong air and smiled like a drug addict. Then I walked after my brother, A. Sommaai. My dad had sent my brother to Bangkok for studies and to fight. He stayed at Theod Thai gym, my uncle’s gym. My uncle’s name is Uncle Mak or Samak Suksamai. Brother Maai led my dad and me to the front gate to take a bus. The conductor shouted very loudly, “The destination is Bangkae!” When the bus stopped, people rushed in to get seats. Don’t worry, my dad was very fast. He jumped on the bus even before it stopped. When my brother and I got on the bus we found my dad was sitting and smiling. My dad tapped on the seats. My dad was great. At that time, I was still a child boxer and only  24-25 kg. But I was amazingly fast. Uncle Mak had heard about how fast I was and sent an invitation to my dad asking him to bring me to Bangkok for fighs. Before arriving at Bangkae, my brother got up. I got up too. He rang the bell and the conductor shouted, “next stop!” What a beautiful sound. We got off in front of Rangbua Temple before crossing the street to Soi 50. We walked through a reed field. Each reed was taller than a man. We walked along a wooden boardwalk for nearly a kilometer and then arrived Theod Thai gym. Uncle Mak had been there training since 8 am. I wai’d to him. He asked my brother to give me a massage, applying Thai boxing liniment to my body. After that we had food and took a nap.  That night he would bring me to fight. Other fighters who finished training were working out. Theod Thai Gym’s  owner was named Jongang Huangkai Khunpolnoi Theod Thai (Sid Prasung), he was a champion. He was finishing up training and  I greeted him after I had finished with the oil massage. Brother Pol was well-known, as he was a fighter from Taklee, Nakhon Sawan. He was my idol. I showed my dancing moves. Hahaha, no I showed my kicking techniques and performed shadow-boxing for a bit. Brother Pol came and asked “Your style and techniques look good. Are you ready for the fight tonight?” I nodded right away before bragging: “If the opponent is the same size, you can sell your house and car and bet on me. I’ve beaten up every nakmuay in the South.” Haha I was bragging even before becoming well-known. Brother Pol said he would bet on me. Uncle Mak called me to come eat. After having food, Uncle Mak gave me 2 small, yellow allergy pills. I slept and woke up around 4 to 5 pm. This medicine knocked me out and I slept. Haha, then we had dinner and headed to the stadium.  It was not Rajadamnern or Lumpini. But it was a boxing ring at a temple fair at Phra Samut Chedi, Samutprakan. The fair was packed and it took us almost an hour to find the boxing ring. The other matches had already started before we arrived. I was asked to get ready. I didn’t know what name I would use. My dad brought the list and showed me that my opponent was Ai Neung Sitbunjong. Uncle Mak said my name should be Deknoi Kor Sor Mor Kor. What a name! Before I got on the stage, he set up a side bet of 40,000 Baht, which is 20,000 Baht per side. Uncle Mak told me to sandbag early so they could increase the bet. The fight had only 3 rounds, and I was told that I should not do much in the first round. When the bet went up, he would send me a signal [to go harder].

Before the fight started, I performed the Wai Kru Ram Muay. Ai Neung performed his Ram Muay really well. I saw his physique and smiled to myself. He was very small.  I didn’t know why they let him fight me! I confidently planned to stay back for 2 rounds before beating him. I never saw such a small fighter. Uncle Mak and the other person came to take off my Mongkol. They asked me what I thought, and I smiled and told them that it would be a knockout. Hahaha.

In the first round I didn’t do much.  Ai Neung kicked, teeped and hit my ribs multiple times. Before the end of the round, they signaled me to go. But I was not in a rush. I went back to the corner when the round ended. They told me I should be serious now, and I nodded and got up. The bell rang for the second round. I walked toward Ai Neung to grab his neck for clinch and knees. Once I grabbed, he pulled away and kicked me repeated. His kicking technique with switching legs was amazing. He struck me left and right. I got mad. When the round ended, I went back to my corner. They thought I was still stalling. I smiled and wanted to tell them that I was fighting seriously but couldn’t do anything. If I said this though, he wouldn’t believe me because my dad and brother bragged a lot about me. I never thought I would fight with such a skilled fighter and with so many techniques like this. I nodded and got up.  In the third round, I came forward right away. Ai Neung still used the same techniques from the round before. I didn’t think I could beat him. He punched and kicked very fast. There was less than half a minute left. He couldn’t avoid my knees. I grabbed his neck and kneed him a few times. The audience cheered very loudly.  The referee let it continue and did not break it. It looked like Ai Neung was starting to give up. I came back with many strikes by the time the bell rang. Ai Neung jumped around the ring joyfully. I did the same, acting like it was sure to win. But really, I thought I’d lost for sure. When the referee signaled the result, it was a draw. I was extremely happy. I acted like I had won to get attention, but I was actually embarrassed because I had bragged a lot. When they called me over to assess me, I had told Pi Pol to sell his house and his car. If it had not been for Uncle Mak’s reputation [and me being brought by him], I might have lost. Thank you for not making me lose face. After changing, Uncle Mak told my dad and me to continue training. He said we [me and Ai Neung] would fight again at Samrong stadium, which was the biggest stadium after [the National stadia] Rajadamnern and Lumpinee at that time. It would be a 5 round fight. I nodded and said I would beat him in 5 rounds. I still was bragging. In my mind though, I told myself that I had just lost. I always knew when I fought with somebody [whether I’d really won or lost]. But in that moment I didn’t want to be embarrassed. Hahaha. The next morning, Uncle Mak asked my dad to have me stay and train with him. He would arrange for me to go to school nearby.  I hoped that my dad wouldn’t let me [live at the gym].  I saw how my brother and Pi Jong, another fighter, lived here. It was a difficult life. They woke up at 5 am and went to get water from the canal and carried it back. After that they went out running and then trained. Luckily my dad said I was still too young. He wanted me to be a bit older. Uncle Mak asked him not to give me to any other gym. He gave my dad 2,000 Baht. We left and took a bus to Hualumpong. Nobody came with us.  My brother went to the university. This is the start of my journey. I thought I was the best. But I met one better [in Ai Neung]. Hahaha  If you want to know how my next fight was and with whom I fought, check out the book “Boxing Legend of the South”.

Muay Thai

A 100 lb. (46 kg) female Muay Thai fighter. Originally I trained under Kumron Vaitayanon (Master K) and Kaensak sor. Ploenjit in New Jersey. I then moved to Thailand to train and fight full time in April of 2012, devoting myself to fighting 100 Thai fights, as well as blogging full time. Having surpassed 100, and then 200, becoming the westerner with the most fights in Thailand, in history, my new goal is to fight an impossible 471 times, the historical record for the greatest number of documented professional fights (see western boxer Len Wickwar, circa 1940), and along the way to continue documenting the Muay Thai of Thailand in the Muay Thai Library project: see patreon.com/sylviemuay
