Skipping with Heavy Rope vs Speed Rope - What Are The Differences?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to see what everyone says as it seems there are a lot of members who are in/have been to Thailand.

My gym supplies speed ropes, but after stopping in at a few other gyms over the years I'd come to prefer the heavy ones and have since purchased my own. I feel like it helps work my upper body and gets it warmed up a lot better than a speed rope.

Most people at my gym prefer the speed rope, but I think it's just because they haven't used the heavy rope long enough to get used to it and it can be a painful process when you're starting to skip with it. I agree that the heavy rope is good for warming up the upper body. I find the speed rope is better for warming up my legs, but if you can sprint quite well using the heavy rope it's probably about the same.

There are only a few heavy ropes at my current gym, most are speed ropes. I don't want to come off sounding like an ass, but well, the speed rope is for speed, so I can see boxers and their footwork being better fitted to that approach. The heavy rope is more of a workout and for endurance. I like both ropes and use both ropes, but that frickin' heavy rope makes me want to kill someone when it hits my toes.

Fair point about agility/footwork. We mainly skip rope as a warm up to trainjng - we circuits with things like agility ladders in our conditioning sessions plus general footwork as part of technique sessions.

For warm up purposes I prefer the heavy rope as I feel it gets my whole body where the speed rooe feels like it's mostly my legs that are warm in the 10-15 min we skip.

I prefer speed ropes because you can learn and invent so many tricks and are better for footwork. Heavy ones make your upper body works but double unders with a speed rope make it too :) I did this short video of me making some tricks a few months ago lol.

As you can see near the end of the video, in the clip where I wear a blue t-shirt, i'm using another speed rope that is so thin, sharp, light and soo fast: I don't raccomend that one because it's uncontrollable and really cuts you when you get hit. The other one is much better because it's both fast and a bit heavy
