Master K wrote poems for a few photos he took of me at his house the other day. He showed them to me and then said I had to translate them from Thai to English for my mom.
My grasp of Thai poetry is theoretical – there are rules about coupling, rhythms, rhymes and breaks and I understand not a single one of them. So rest assured when Master K speaks these words, they’re lyrical and phonically rhythmic – but the ideas are here and poetry is about manipulating language, so I still like my feeble attempts.
ต้องมนต์ มวยไทย ไม่อาจถอน
we must say a spell for you not to go
ชีพจร เต้นแรง แข้งขาสั่น
legs shake and pulse
จะกลับไป เมืองไทย ในเร็ววัน
you will return to Thailand in a few days
อยู่ที่นั่น สักหนึ่งปี “โชคดีนะเธอ”
good luck in your year over there
บอกลา หมาเรา เจ้าสองหนุ่ม
say goodbye to my two dogs
เคยอุ้ม-เคยป้อน ลาก่อนแล้ว
used to hold, used to feed, already you leave
เคยยิน เสียงเจ้า เห่าแจ้วแจ้ว
used to feel our beautiful voices bark
ครบปีแล้ว จะมาใหม่ ให้สัญญา
in a year you promise to come once more
“ไข่มุก” ซุกหน้า น้ำตาไหล
Khaimook hides his face
ษิลวี จากไป ไม่เห็นหน้า
Sylvie will go away and he won’t see her
ฉันคง โศกเศร้า เฝ้าโศกา
I might grieve and cry
คำสัญญา ที่พูดไว้ ขอให้จริง
promise to keep your word, I beg you
ไข่นก..”ขอให้โชคดีนะ”
Nok says “good luck!”
ไข่มุก มองหน้า น้ำตาไหล
Khaimook begins to cry
หนึ่งปี ที่อยู่ เมืองไทย
a year in Thailand
รู้ไว้ สองเรา เฝ้าคอย
know that we will wait for you
