Short Film
I’ve wanted to show more of my experiences surrounding a fight: the moments before, between and after – all the things of fights that aren’t fighting. It’s a little difficult to capture some of this because I fight at night and the low light makes filming difficult, but it’s also a matter of pulling together hours of mundane preparation (like doing my hair or walking to the venue) and observational downtime.
So this short film is a small collection of images from my fight on the King’s Birthday. Festival fights are very atmospheric and this one especially because of fireworks, fire balloons and a long stretch of waiting before my fight.
My husband Kevin is the cameraman and as a result is always “behind the scenes” and prefers to stay in the background. He edited and put together this film as someone who shares these experiences with me – he has been at every fight and witnessed countless hours of my training. My permission and approval was required for final cut, but we have never disagreed about expression and I think the film is beautiful.
