Hey, guys I took some light sparring footage from my first week back after a covid layoff and think I look terrible. Would love some critique

And I've already heard all the Ben Askren jokes so come up with something new lol

lol when the shoe fits bro haha. Keep it up man! a few notes to keep in mind:

  • Movement is good, too much movement is bad. Your movement was good! you cut angles, and capitalised on your opponents high guard by changing levels. Your opponent was very stationary, turning into a punching bag almost. If you were sparring someone who moved more, or applied more pressure, your movement can turn into too much movement really quickly, wasting energy. Take your time, move when you need to.
  • Use your reach. When you fought long, you were landing more. It also looked like you had the reach and height advantage as well, so if you have it, use it. You landed your push kick every time you threw it, switch it up with your lead teep. Once you land your teep, you can then mix it up with a fake teep to rear straight to keep your opponent guessing. You changed levels in the video, so you should pick it up easy.
  • Combos. Get use to throwing 4 punch combinations or 4 punch with kick at the end combos. You threw in maybe 3 strikes max combos from what I saw. That may transition to you only throwing single shots in a competition fight. If you feel comfortable with 4 strike combos, you will natural get use to throwing more in actual competitions.
  •  Knees. Throw more, I don't think you threw any. They help closing the distance, they can be hidden and set up behind punches, as well as set up your sweeps. Your sweeps were really good, so if you add knees to set them up it will give you more variety.

Getting better is a process man, and you filming sparring and sharing it on the internet is a good (can be bad) way of getting critiqued. Here is probably the best place for it, so keep it up and keep grinding away.

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback! I'm going in tonight and I'll try to keep all that in mind when I spar. My goal is to be able to have a fight or two, but I still feel really far off from that, especially after the covid break

    • I'm kinda stunned. I went back on my interest and clicked on some ONE highlight which supposedly involved one fighter using the other fighter's "pet move" against them. I played the video and just watched two people throwing crazy techniques and hitting air back and forth. I never got to the "move". Why? How did this happen that missing strikes was a "thing". It's like watching basketball highlights of "moves" where the basket is missed. Why? This seems to be a product of Technique Porn, the spread of demos and "moves" mimicked from fighters, where the actual efficacy is of no merit...until there is a Knockout. A crazy "evolution" of fighting.
    • Interesting fight featuring top two 105 lbers of the two Entertainment promotions. Islay Erika Bomogao with the victory, Mongkutpetch complaining later that she was robbed. Round 1 a VERY clear win for Bonogao. Round 2, I don't believe somewhat wonk throws in the clinch really score in Amateur (at least IFMA amateur, I've seen Loma toss fighters all over the place and lose). Seems like a solid win for Bomogao who is a really interesting little fighter, who I kinda love watching fight (even though she's on ONE). Here most recent fight, where she's fairly well handled, until she closes the deal. I love the vitality she fights with, and that she's not a heavy combo-forward fighter.  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2029120667993528
    • ALL IN. I see high-awareness, well-intentioned Westerners urging Thai fighters to invest (the operative word) in social media content creation (labor), which is smart, even needed advice as it goes. But...in the larger scope, the more you work (operative word) to turn Craft into Labor, the further you work to transform it into an exploitive - that is to say more precisely, extractive - means, and subject it to the forces of de-skilling. "We are not very good fighters...but, please become much more like us, so we can consume you more readily, even as fighting skill erodes". The Nouvelle Era has many hidden pitfalls, not the least of which is the making of the New Man (the hyper individual) who has become supremely digitalized. All this is well and good, as its the tide of the Earth right now, but I say: "Keep an eye on where Craft gets turned into Labor" if you want to trace the operative drain of the human skill and meaning...as we all become Digital Laborers. As we all are Colonized.

    • That sounds promising if you've already moved, how are things going for you now?
    • I'm sorry I don't really know. Sylvie is in touch with a collector and this person is where she buys hers, but there are not multiple copies available. Maybe someone else would know of a larger source.
    • Where can I find some physical old Muay Thai magazines? I am located in Bangkok. Thanks
